Business Facilitator

Facilitation in business, organizational development (OD), and in consensus decision-making refers to the process of designing and running a successful meeting.

As an experienced Facilitator, I concern myself with all the tasks needed to run a productive and impartial meeting. Facilitation serves the needs of any group who are meeting with a common purpose, whether it be making a decision, solving a problem, or simply exchanging ideas and information. Company dynamics are often complicated and team members are rarely completely honest in their views for fear of offending a colleague or boss or looking stupid. An impartial facilitator is often essential for complete engagement and honesty from a team.

I do not lead the group, nor do I try to distract or to entertain. I design, run and actively participate in your meeting to guide your team towards successful consensus…

  • Being open to all suggestions
  • Building on what is given, not knocking down ideas
  • Allowing others to speak or express themselves freely
  • Ensuring that the identity of the owner of any idea is clear
  • Using established rules of engagement (time-outs, conflict resolution)
  • Dealing with and recording unresolved issues

The Facilitation Process:

I work with you to understand the purpose and desired outcome of your meeting and we will agree the arrangements for the meeting. This includes researching the meeting beforehand to understand why it is being held and the stakeholders involved.

The practical arrangements will usually be your responsibility (booking the room and inviting the participants) although I will usually manage the final details to ensure it is conducive for your desired outcome (location and layout of the room).

The Meeting:

It is essential that everyone gets fully briefed for the meeting and that everyone knows the purpose and potential consequences of the meeting prior to attending. During the meeting itself, it is my role to foster a safe environment that encourages participation from all attendees. I monitor the agenda, keep time and manage the group process, behaviour and dynamics. Where appropriate, I may have the opportunity to teach new brainstorming and sharing skills. I prefer to have a minute taker present as this ensures the facilitation is seamless and all important points and unresolved issues are accurately recorded.
